Bleeding Gums

Bleeding gums are a sign of gingivitis, or inflammation of gums which are not properly been taken care of and needs more attention. It’s a common and mild form of gum disease. Since so many people have bleeding gums, people often donโ€™t take it seriously enough.

Causes

The main cause of bleeding gums is the buildup of plaque at the gum line. Plaque that is not removed will harden into tartar. This will lead to increased bleeding and a more advanced form of gum and jaw bone disease.

  • Any bleeding disorders
  • Brushing too hard
  • Hormonal changes during pregnancy
  • Ill-fitting dentures or other dental appliances
  • Improper flossing
  • Infection, which can be either in a tooth or the gum
  • Leukemia
  • Scurvy
  • Use of blood thinners
  • Vitamin K deficiency

Diagnosis

The dentist can diagnose the cause of bleeding gums by visually examining the oral cavity. Visual signs such as receding gum lines, swollen gums, light bleeding from dental equipment, and cavities can help dentists easily diagnose the causes of bleeding gums. However, if your dentist notices your teeth are in good health, they will most likely recommend blood tests to help determine what could be the cause. The dentist may also ask you questions about your medical history to help identify causes. Keep up regular visits to your dentist.

Ways to Stop Bleeding Gums

  1. Practice good oral hygiene. Bleeding gums may be a sign of poor dental hygiene
  2. Stop smoking
  3. Reduce stress level
  4. Optimize your intake of vitamin C
  5. Apply a cold compress
  6. Eat fewer carbs
  7. Use gum paint
  8. Rinse mouth with warm saltwater

Home Remedy

  • The best way to tackle the problem is to brush and floss your teeth.

Rinse mouth with saltwater:
Because bacteria and inflammation in the mouth cause gum disease, regularly rinsing your mouth with a mixture of warm salt water for a few seconds three to four times a day can reduce bacteria and stop bleeding gums.

Visit your dentist for a professional cleaning and dental exam at least twice in a year. This can help prevent early gum disease from progressing into more serious gum disease.
